Mission and Outreach

Weston UMC is sharing the many and diverse gifts with which God has blessed us.  We continue in our efforts to “Make Jesus Known In the World.”

As a result, we are having a real impact on the lives of our brothers and sisters in need, both near and far.  We are following in Jesus’ footsteps, reaching out in love and compassion in His name.

A partial list of on-going missions and outreach activities include:

THE NICARAGUA COVENANT  The Covenant between the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church, our Covenant partner La Iglesia de Cristo de Nicaragua, and our mission partners in Nicaragua was formed to accompany one another in solidarity as a response to the unjust and inequitable differences between the North and the South, the rich and the poor.  We envision a world where all life is valued equally and the basic rights of human dignity, health and education are available to all.

PUMPKIN PATCH.  Last year was the third year that we held a fundraiser sale of pumpkins provided by the Navajos in New Mexico.  A small army of volunteers unloaded around 1,300 pumpkins across our front lawn on Route 117.  For over a month leading up to Halloween, the Rev. Melius and other volunteers gave flyers about our church and where the proceeds from the sale were going, to passing motorists who stopped at our church, perhaps for the first time, to shop from our “pumpkin patch”.  Over $10,000 was raised this year with 67% going to the Navajos and 33% going to support our Missions.

WATCH, the Waltham Alliance to Create Housing, operates in Waltham and its contiguous communities.  They build, preserve and promote affordable housing, provide economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income people, and empower communities and stabilize neighborhoods.  They help low income families change society, find a better place to live, and find better employment.  They also teach English as a Second Language and train volunteers as tutors to work one-on-one with learners.  This past year, two members of our church are served as tutors for the WATCH program, a small Weston contingency  attended a Waltham Town Meeting in support of the rental assistance program being proposed by WATCH.

IMAGINE NO MALARIA is an extraordinary effort of the people across The United Methodist Church to bring an end to deaths from malaria in Africa. Here at Weston UMC, we are putting our faith into action in many ways to support this goal. For example, our Mother’s Day fund raiser together with matching funds brought in a total of $2,710 to save the lives of over 270 young children and pregnant women. We’ve also been collecting used shoes for “ReRun Shoes” in exchange for treated mosquito nets.

CROP WALK Church World Service:  Proceeds from this inter-denominational event fight hunger both locally and worldwide.  Our church is one of hundreds of churches nationwide that participate simultaneously in this annual walk.

ST. ANDREWS UMC, JAMAICA PLAIN.  We are in the thirteenth year of our sister church relationship with this Hispanic community in Jamaica Plain.  St. Andrews UMC is a very old and beautiful church which requires ongoing repairs and upkeep. This year we continued to help our brothers and sisters with financial support

Sukanya and FamilyCHILD FUND INTERNATIONAL (Formerly Christian Children’s Fund).  We have a longstanding relationship with the CFI/CCF.  This year, we continued to support Sukanya in India, now in 9th grade.
